How we mark Kumbh dates: official, provisional, expected
Every bathing day on this site carries one of three labels, with the source it comes from and the day we checked it. A date is official when the authority in charge has published it in a dated notice, provisional when the authority has announced it but it can still change, and expected when it comes from the Hindu calendar and no authority has announced it yet.
The board is built from the same fact sheet as every date on this site, so it always matches them. Each date carries its own status and source.
Below are how the dates are set, the board of every day with its status, and a dated log of what changed. When an official date changes, we change it here first, and the calendar feed and every page that shows the date change with it.
What each label means
Official
The authority in charge of the mela has published the day in a dated notice we can link to: a government order, a gazette, the mela authority’s plan or its own website. We still show the date we last checked it.
Provisional
An authority has announced the day, often through a meeting reported by the press or a page on its website, but there is no dated notice yet, or the notice says it can change. Plan around it, and book only what you can cancel.
Expected
No authority has announced the day. It comes from the Hindu calendar: the tithi and the festival it falls on, worked out by the Tirth panchang for the bathing place. Treat it as a guide to the season, not a fixed date.
How the dates are set
- 1Tradition and the sky
A Kumbh falls when Jupiter and the Sun reach the signs tradition links with each place. The panchang turns that into tithis and days.
- 2The seers and the akharas
The akharas and the seers' council meet the administration to agree the main bathing days, above all the Amrit Snans.
- 3The government notice
The state or the mela authority announces the days on its website or through the district, often months ahead and sometimes with later changes.
- 4Our check
We mark each day official, provisional or expected, with its source and the date we checked, and change it the day a notice changes.
Every bathing day, with its label
Amrit Snan days are marked. Tap a day for its own page, or subscribe to a Kumbh’s dates in your calendar.
- OfficialAnnounced by the authority in charge.
- ProvisionalAnnounced by the authority, but it can still change.
- ExpectedFrom the calendar or a proposed plan. Not yet announced.

Why dates disagree between websites
Many sites publish date lists before any authority has. Some copy an older list, and some take dates from a calendar worked out for a different city, which can move a sankranti by a day. Bathing days follow the tithi, the lunar day, so the same festival falls on a different date every year.
Treat a list as reliable only when it names its source and the date it was checked. If a page calls itself official, check that its address ends in gov.in or nic.in; our page on checking a booking explains the warning signs.
Questions people ask
How often are the labels checked?
Whenever an authority publishes or changes a date, and at least once a week in a Kumbh season. The date we last checked is at the top of each dates page.
Is KumbhMela.info an official site?
No. It is an independent guide run by Tirth.com. Every date links to the official or published source it comes from.
Kumbh ki tarikhen pakki hain?
Not all of them. Nashik’s dates are in the Kumbh Mela Authority’s plan; Haridwar’s are on the official website but not yet in a dated notice, so they are Provisional; Ujjain’s bathing days have not been announced. Each day’s status is in the board above.
