By train to Ujjain Junction
Ujjain Junction, station code UJN, is on Indian Railways’ Western Railway zone, the Ujjain district says. When we checked the NTES enquiry on 16 October 2026, it listed these trains.
- From Indore Junction (INDB): 44 trains, 15 of them daily. Most express trains take about 1 to 1.5 hours. The fastest was the Vande Bharat (20911), six days a week, at about 40 minutes; daily MEMU and passenger trains take up to about 3 hours.
- From Delhi: 8 trains from New Delhi (NDLS), Hazrat Nizamuddin (NZM) and Delhi Safdarjung (DSJ). Three run daily from New Delhi: the Malwa Express (12920), the 12416 and the 20156, taking about 10.5 to 15 hours.
- From the Mumbai area: 14 trains from Mumbai Central (MMCT), Bandra Terminus (BDTS), Panvel (PNVL) and Kalyan (KYN). Two run daily: the Avantika Express (12961) from Mumbai Central, about 10.5 hours, and the 22943 from Kalyan, about 12 hours. The Duronto (12227) from Mumbai Central runs on Thursdays and Saturdays in about 9.5 hours.
Timetables change. Check your train on NTES or IRCTC before you book, and again the day before you travel.
No special Simhastha trains for 2028 have been announced. As of 16 October 2026 we found no Indian Railways notice of extra trains for the mela. Book only what IRCTC shows, not a train you read about in a forwarded message.
Indian Railways has approved an 8.60 km bypass line between Naikhedi and Chintaman Ganesh stations, so that trains no longer need to reverse at Ujjain, the state government said in February 2026. In April 2026 the state also approved a multimodal transit hub at the Dewas Gate bus stand, with a skywalk to Ujjain railway station. Both are approvals, not finished works.
By air via Indore
The nearest airport with passenger flights is Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport, Indore, run by the Airports Authority of India. The Ujjain district puts it 53 km from Ujjain; the Shri Mahakaleshwar temple’s website says about 58 km.
The district lists regular flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Jaipur, Hyderabad and Bhopal, and the temple’s website also names Ahmedabad and Bengaluru. Routes change, so check with the airlines before you plan around a flight.
From the airport, go on to Ujjain by road, or by train from Indore Junction.
Ujjain has its own airstrip at Datana, but it is not open for passenger flights. Under an agreement of 1 November 2025, the Airports Authority of India is to develop it for ATR-72 aircraft. In June 2026 the project was at the stage of its environmental study, according to the minutes of an expert committee of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. No opening date has been announced.
By road and bus
The Ujjain district says regular buses connect Ujjain with Indore, Bhopal, Ratlam, Gwalior, Mandu, Dhar, Kota and Omkareshwar, and that the city has an AC city bus service.
Check the distance and the time on a map on the day you travel. A normal-day time does not tell you how long the trip will take during the Simhastha.
For 2028 the state has approved the widening of several city roads, including the stretch from Mahakal Square to Kamri Marg, and has asked for parking and homestays within 100 km of Ujjain. The 2028 traffic and parking plan has not been published.
Road and rail works planned for 2028 are tracked, with their status, on the Ujjain works tracker.
| From | Road distance to Ujjain |
|---|---|
| Indore | 53 km |
| Bhopal | 183 km |
| Ahmedabad | 402 km |
| Gwalior | 451 km |
| Jaipur | About 510 km (temple website) |
| Mumbai | 655 km |
