What Chaitra Purnima means
Chaitra Purnima is the full moon of Chaitra, the first month of the Hindu year. In 2027 calendars keep Hanuman Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Lord Hanuman, on the same day. On Hanuman Jayanti devotees go to Hanuman temples, where the Hanuman Chalisa, the Sundar Kand and the Akhand Ramayan are recited.
The official Haridwar Kumbh website calls Chaitra Purnima the full-moon bathing day that closes the major snan calendar of the Kumbh, with a sacred dip, charity and prayers under the full moon. At past Kumbhs it was also a shahi snan. In 2021 the head of the Juna Akhara described it as the one in which, by tradition, only the Bairagi seers take part, with the other akharas represented symbolically.
How the day runs
- Before the dayAs for every bathing day, the mela administration and the district police publish the day’s arrangements, road diversions and parking shortly before it. None had been published for 20 April when we checked.

- The akharasAt the 2021 Kumbh, Chaitra Purnima (27 April 2021) was the last shahi snan, by tradition the bath of the Bairagi akharas. For 2027 the official website lists it as a bathing day, not an Amrit Snan, and no akhara procession has been announced.
