Phalguna Amavasya Amrit Snan: Monday 8 March 2027
The second Amrit Snan of Haridwar Kumbh 2027 falls on Monday 8 March 2027. The akharas take their ceremonial bath first, in an order the mela administration sets with them.
The date is listed on the official Haridwar Kumbh website (checked 18 October 2026); the mela administration first announced it in April 2026, as reported by PTI. No dated government notice listing it was found online. Tithi at sunrise: Phalguna Amavasya, from the Tirth panchang.
Phalguna Amavasya is the new moon of Phalguna. It comes two days after Mahashivratri, so the first two Amrit Snans of the season fall in the same week. Amrit Snan days usually draw the most pilgrims; follow police and mela instructions on the day.

What Phalguna Amavasya means
Phalguna Amavasya is the new moon of the month of Phalguna, two days after Mahashivratri. In 2027 it falls on a Monday, and a new moon on a Monday is kept as Somvati Amavasya. By tradition Somvati Amavasya is counted among the most powerful new moons of the year, a day for a river bath, for charity and for rites for ancestors such as pitru tarpan and pind daan.
The official Haridwar Kumbh website lists the day as an Amrit Snan. It says devotees bathe in the Ganga, pray and perform ancestral rites, believing that the new moon brings spiritual cleansing and merit. The Juna Akhara’s calendar names Monday 8 March 2027 as its second Amrit Snan and calls it Somvati Amavasya. So the first two Amrit Snans of the season fall in the same week.
How the day runs
- Before the dayThe police traffic plan for the first two Amrit Snans had not been published when we checked. In 2021, one Haridwar police plan covered both April shahi snans, keeping vehicles out of the city from 8 to 15 April.
- Morning, akharas firstThe akharas go in procession to Har Ki Pauri and bathe first, in an order the mela administration sets with them. On the Somvati Amavasya shahi snan of 12 April 2021, Har Ki Pauri was kept for the akharas from 7 am. The 2027 order and timings have not been announced.
- Rest of the dayPilgrims bathe at the ghats the police direct them to. The official Haridwar Kumbh website says devotees offer prayers and perform ancestral rites on this new moon.
- At sunsetShri Ganga Sabha holds the evening Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri every day; how it runs on an Amrit Snan day has not been announced. See the Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri.
