What the two days mean
The third Amrit Snan at Trimbakeshwar falls on Bhadrapada Shukla Dwadashi, kept as Vamana Jayanti or Vamana Dwadashi, the birth of Vamana, the fifth avatar of Lord Vishnu. The 2015 Simhastha held its last Trimbakeshwar bath on the same tithi and called it the Vaman Dwadashi Snan.
The bath is at Kushavarta, in the heart of Trimbakeshwar. By local belief the Godavari rises on the Brahmagiri hills, disappears and comes up again in this kund, which gives it its special holiness. Maharashtra Tourism calls the kund the origin of the Godavari, where devotees bathe before praying at the Trimbakeshwar temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. By the arrangement the Nashik district traces to the Peshwas, the Shaiva and Udasin akharas bathe here.
The third Amrit Snan at Nashik falls on Bhadrapada Shukla Ekadashi, kept as Parivartini or Parsva Ekadashi. By tradition Lord Vishnu, asleep through the four months of Chaturmas, turns from one side to the other on this day, which gives the Ekadashi its name, and the Vamana form of Vishnu is worshipped on it. In 2027 it falls between Ganesh Chaturthi on 4 September and Anant Chaturdashi on 14 September.
Only the Vaishnava akharas bathe at Ramkund on this day. Ramkund is believed to be where Lord Rama used to bathe, and by legend he performed the last rites for his father Dasharatha there. Its Asthivilaya Tirth, the bone-dissolving pool, receives the ashes that families bring for their dead.
What happens on the day
- Before the days: no vehicles in the mela areaThe Kumbh Mela Authority’s plan proposes a strict no-vehicle zone in the mela area, with parking outside it and only walking beyond the inner parking. Police notices on road closures and parking for 11 and 12 September had not been published when we checked.
- One centre each dayOn 11 September the Vaishnava akharas bathe at Ramkund in Nashik; on 12 September the Shaiva and Udasin akharas bathe at Kushavarta in Trimbakeshwar, about 30 km away.
- Then the pilgrimsPilgrims bathe at the ghats and kunds the police direct them to. The 2027 order and timings have not been announced. Amrit Snan days usually draw the most pilgrims; follow police and mela instructions on the day.
