Maghi Purnima Snan at Magh Mela 2027: Saturday 20 February
The Maghi Purnima snan of Magh Mela 2027 is expected on Saturday 20 February 2027, the full moon of Magha. By tradition it is the last day of kalpvas, a month after Paush Purnima.
The date and tithi come from the Hindu calendar (Tirth panchang). At sunrise the tithi is Magha Shukla Chaturdashi; the Purnima begins later that morning. The date stays expected until the Prayagraj Mela Authority publishes its list of 2027 bathing days; on 18 October 2026 we found no such list from the mela authority, the district or the Uttar Pradesh government. Reporting on the mela administration's first planning meeting, Amar Ujala named 20 February for Maghi Purnima (27 August 2026).
A panchang for that morning shows Shukla Chaturdashi at sunrise, not Purnima. The full moon tithi begins at about 8 am and ends before sunrise the next day; calendars keep Maghi Purnima on the 20th.

Why 20 February, when the tithi at sunrise is Chaturdashi
Most bathing days take their name from the tithi at sunrise. On 20 February 2027 the sunrise tithi is still Shukla Chaturdashi, the fourteenth day of the bright half.
By Drik Panchang’s calculation for Prayagraj, the Purnima tithi begins at 7:59 am on Saturday 20 February and ends at 4:52 am on Sunday 21 February, before that day’s sunrise. The Tirth panchang gives the same start, 7:59 am. All the daylight hours of the full moon fall on Saturday 20 February, and both calendars keep Maghi Purnima on that day.
The report of the mela administration’s first planning meeting also gives 20 February for Maghi Purnima. When the mela authority publishes its list, go by that date.
What the day means, and what happens at the Sangam
The Prayagraj Mela Authority links Maghi Purnima with the worship of Guru Brihaspati and with the belief that the Gandharva comes down from the heavens to the Sangam on this day.
Pilgrims bathe at the Sangam, where the Ganga and the Yamuna meet. Some walk across the riverbank to the bathing ghats laid out for the mela; others take a boat from the ghat near the fort out to the meeting point, where, the district says, priests sit on small platforms in the river and help pilgrims with puja and the ritual bath. Read the Sangam guide for the ghats, the boats and the shrines nearby.
For kalpvasis it closes the month. In 2025, according to PIB, kalpvasis ended their kalpvas on Magh Purnima with a final dip, puja and daan. PIB described the customs that go with it, as tradition: kalpvasis hold a Satyanarayan Katha and a havan, make offerings to their tirth purohits, immerse in the Ganga the barley sown at the start of kalpvas, and take their tulsi plant home.
Official accounts differ on the very last bath. The mela authority describes Mahashivratri, two weeks later, as the final holy bath of the kalpvasis, although by tradition the month itself ends on Maghi Purnima. Families follow their own custom.
Maghi Purnima in the Magh Mela season
Maghi Purnima is the fifth of six main bathing days. After it, only Mahashivratri remains.

- Saturday 6 February: Mauni Amavasya, the new moon of Magha and, by tradition, the main bath of the mela.
- Thursday 11 February: Basant Panchami, Saraswati and the turn towards spring.
- Saturday 20 February: Maghi Purnima, the full moon on which kalpvas ends, by tradition (this page).

Plan the visit
- Main bathing days usually draw large numbers of pilgrims; follow police and mela instructions on the day.
- Expect to walk. At the 2025 Maha Kumbh, the mela authority kept vehicles out of the mela area from the day before to the day after each main bathing day, and put parking 1 to 2 km from the ghats. The traffic rules for 2027 have not been announced.
- If you are coming for the end of kalpvas, plan around Saturday 20 February. Read kalpvas at the Magh Mela for how the month begins and ends.
- For trains, buses and flights, read how to reach Prayagraj; for a tent on the mela ground or a hotel in the city, read where to stay for Magh Mela 2027.
- Book only what you can cancel until the Prayagraj Mela Authority publishes its list, and check who runs a camp before you pay: how to check a Kumbh booking.
