What Shravana Amavasya means
The second Amrit Snan falls on the new moon that ends Shravan in the amanta calendar. In Maharashtra this new moon is Bail Pola, also called Pola Amavasya or Pithori Amavasya. By tradition farmers give their bullocks a day off work, bathe them, decorate them and lead them in procession, and a legend holds that on this date the young Krishna slew the demon Polasur. At Trimbakeshwar the temple trust holds a procession of oxen on the day.
The Amrit Snan itself comes four weeks after the first, at the same two places: Ramkund in Nashik, where the Vaishnava akharas bathe, and Kushavarta in Trimbakeshwar, where the Shaiva and Udasin akharas bathe. The Nashik district traces this division to arrangements made by the Peshwas.
What happens on the day
- Before the day: roads closePolice close roads and set parking for big festival days. On the third Shravan Monday of 2025, for example, private vehicles were kept out of Trimbakeshwar and parked at Talegaon Phata (from Nashik) and Amboli Phata (from Jawhar). The notice for 31 August 2027 had not been published when we checked.
- The akhara processionsAt the second shahi snan of 2015, on 13 September 2015, the mahants of the three Vaishnava akharas, Nirmohi, Nirvani and Digambar, led the procession from Tapovan to Ramkund, and the Shaiva akharas held a similar procession at Trimbakeshwar. The 2027 order and timings have not been announced.
- Then the pilgrimsPilgrims bathe at Ramkund, Kushavarta and the other ghats the police direct them to. Amrit Snan days usually draw the most pilgrims; follow police and mela instructions on the day.
