What Mesh Sankranti means
Mesh Sankranti is the day the Sun enters Mesha (Aries). In much of North India it is kept as Baisakhi, when farmers begin the wheat harvest, and Sikhs mark it as the day the Khalsa Panth was founded in 1699.
At Haridwar the day has a special place in the Kumbh tradition. A verse quoted in the mela administration’s 2021 report says the Kumbh bath at Haridwar comes when Jupiter is in Kumbha (Aquarius) and the Sun enters Mesha. The official 2027 website calls this day the main, or Pramukh, Amrit Snan, and says devotees regard it as one of the most spiritually potent bathing days of the mela. It is the last of the four Amrit Snans listed for 2027, and Ram Navami follows the next day.
How the day runs
- Before the dayAt the 2021 Kumbh, the Haridwar police traffic plan kept vehicles out of the city from 8 to 15 April, around the 12 and 14 April shahi snans, and sent them to outer parking by the direction they came from. The plan for 14 April 2027 has not been published.
- Akharas firstThe akharas go to Har Ki Pauri in procession and bathe first, batch after batch, in time slots the mela administration sets. At the 14 April 2021 shahi snan, the Niranjani and Anand akharas bathed first, then the Juna and then the Mahanirvani, and the mela police said every akhara had to finish at Har Ki Pauri before sunset. The 2027 order has not been announced.
- Everyone elseIn 2021 Har Ki Pauri was kept for the akharas alone on 14 April, and other pilgrims bathed at the other ghats of Haridwar and Rishikesh.
- At sunsetShri Ganga Sabha holds the evening Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri every day; how it runs on an Amrit Snan day has not been announced. See the Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri.
