Mauni Amavasya Snan at Magh Mela 2027: Saturday 6 February
The Mauni Amavasya snan of Magh Mela 2027 is expected on Saturday 6 February 2027, the new moon of Magha. By tradition it is the main bathing day of the Magh Mela.
The date and tithi come from the Hindu calendar (Tirth panchang). The date stays expected until the Prayagraj Mela Authority publishes its list of 2027 bathing days; on 18 October 2026 we found no such list from the mela authority, the district or the Uttar Pradesh government. Reporting on the mela administration's first planning meeting, Amar Ujala named 6 February among the main bathing days (27 August 2026).
It usually draws the most pilgrims of the season; follow police and mela instructions on the day. By tradition, sadhus, saints and kalpvasis keep a vow of silence (maun vrat) on this day.

What Mauni Amavasya means by tradition
Maun means silence, and amavasya is the new moon. By tradition, sadhus, saints and kalpvasis keep a maun vrat on this day, as a way to turn the mind inward. In one practice described for the day, the devotee bathes before dawn, in Brahma Muhurat, then takes the vow of silence, and breaks the fast only after the amavasya tithi ends. Customs differ from family to family.
The Prayagraj Mela Authority gives two more reasons for the day. It says it is believed that the planets are most favourable for a river bath on Mauni Amavasya, and it links the day with Rishabh Dev, whom it calls one of the first sages, who is said to have ended a long vow of silence by bathing at the Sangam.
In a Kumbh year the day is also an Amrit Snan: at the 2025 Maha Kumbh it was the second of three. For the meaning of the day across the Kumbhs, read Mauni Amavasya: why silence.
At the Sangam on Mauni Amavasya
Pilgrims bathe at the Sangam, where the Ganga and the Yamuna meet. Some walk across the riverbank to the bathing ghats laid out for the mela; others take a boat from the ghat near the fort out to the meeting point, where, the district says, priests sit on small platforms in the river and help pilgrims with puja and the ritual bath. Read the Sangam guide for the ghats, the boats and the shrines nearby.
The day falls in the middle of kalpvas, so kalpvasis are already living in their tents by the river; for them it is one of the baths of their month, kept with the vow of silence.
Mauni Amavasya in the Magh Mela season
Mauni Amavasya is the third of six main bathing days, about halfway through kalpvas. Basant Panchami follows five days later.
- Friday 15 January: Makar Sankranti, the first bath; by tradition, the day daan begins at the mela.
- Friday 22 January: Paush Purnima, the full moon on which kalpvas begins, by tradition.
- Saturday 6 February: Mauni Amavasya, the new moon of Magha and, by tradition, the main bath of the mela (this page).
- Thursday 11 February: Basant Panchami, Saraswati and the turn towards spring.
- Saturday 20 February: Maghi Purnima, the full moon on which kalpvas ends, by tradition.
- Saturday 6 March: Mahashivratri, the night of Shiva and the last bath of the mela.

Plan the visit
- Mauni Amavasya usually draws the most pilgrims of the season; follow police and mela instructions on the day.
- Expect to walk. At the 2025 Maha Kumbh, the mela authority kept vehicles out of the mela area from the day before to the day after each main bathing day, and put parking 1 to 2 km from the ghats. The traffic rules for 2027 have not been announced.
- At the 2025 Maha Kumbh, the vehicle rules around Mauni Amavasya ran longer than for other days: from two days before to two days after the bath. Plan to arrive early and wait for the 2027 traffic plan.
- For trains, buses and flights, read how to reach Prayagraj; for a tent on the mela ground or a hotel in the city, read where to stay for Magh Mela 2027.
- Book only what you can cancel until the Prayagraj Mela Authority publishes its list, and check who runs a camp before you pay: how to check a Kumbh booking.
