What Nav Samvatsar means

Nav Samvatsar is the Hindu new year. It falls on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, the first day of the bright half of Chaitra, which begins a new year of the Vikram Samvat calendar. The day began Samvat 2083 in March 2026, so 7 April 2027 begins Samvat 2084. The same day opens Chaitra Navratri, nine days of devotion that lead to Ram Navami. Across India the new year is kept under other names too, among them Ugadi, Gudi Padwa, Cheti Chand and Navreh, festivals of the start of spring and of the new harvest.

The official Haridwar Kumbh website says pilgrims mark Nav Samvatsar with a holy bath in the Ganga, temple visits and prayers for prosperity and for good beginnings in the year ahead.
