More Than Bathing: What Happens at a Kumbh Mela
The bath is the centre of the Kumbh, but around it runs a season of religious life: akhara camps, processions, talks by saints, kalpvas, free kitchens and cultural stages. The official Haridwar Kumbh 2027 site groups its events the same way: spiritual gatherings, cultural celebrations, sacred processions and moments of devotion such as aarti.
This page describes lasting practices, with examples from past melas. It is not a programme for any coming Kumbh.
Here is what each part is, and what a first-time visitor can watch with respect. Arrangements change with every mela, so take dates and venues only from the authority that runs it.
Life in the camps: akharas, satsang and kalpvas
During a Kumbh the mela ground fills with the temporary camps of akharas, ashrams, teachers and pilgrims.

Akharas are the orders of sadhus; government material for Maha Kumbh 2025 describes thirteen established akharas, listed on our akharas page. In a 2024 ETV Bharat report, an akhara office-bearer said that once the camp’s dharma dhwaja, its flag, is installed, worship and aarti are held there morning and evening, and the camp kitchen is lit only after that. The Maha Kumbh 2025 site describes the camps as places where sadhus and seekers discuss philosophy and meditate.
Satsang and pravachan
Satsang, which a government backgrounder translates as “associating with truth”, means listening to saints and scholars; a pravachan is a religious discourse. For Kumbh 2019 the Uttar Pradesh government built a Pravachan Pandal and four convention centres for spiritual events.
Kalpvas
At Prayagraj, many pilgrims keep kalpvas: according to tradition, a month in tents near the Sangam, from Paush Purnima to Magh Purnima, with vows of simplicity, celibacy and daily prayer, and days of meditation, scripture study and satsang. It is kept every year at the Magh Mela: see the Magh Mela 2027 dates and kalpvas explained.
Processions: the peshwai and the Amrit Snan
Two kinds of procession frame the bathing days.
| What | Peshwai | Amrit Snan procession |
|---|---|---|
| When | Before the main bathing days | On the Amrit Snan days |
| What it does | Each akhara enters the mela, going to its camp | The akharas go to the river in an order the Akhara Parishad fixes with the mela committee, the Maha Kumbh 2025 site says |
| What you see | Saints arriving on elephants, horses and decorated carriages, with bands playing and people showering petals, the Prayagraj Mela Authority says | Mahamandaleshwars on chariots, Naga sadhus on horses and other saints on foot, while pilgrims line both sides to receive their blessings |
| Its name now | Chhavni Pravesh, entry into the camp: the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad’s president said in January 2025 that the name had been changed | Amrit Snan, once called Shahi Snan |
Routes and timings are set afresh for every mela. Amrit Snan days usually draw the most pilgrims; follow police and mela instructions on the day. Read what to expect around an akhara procession, including the peshwai, and Amrit Snan or Shahi Snan.
Free kitchens, cultural stages and religious assemblies

Many camps, akharas and charities serve free food at bhandaras and langars. Before Maha Kumbh 2025, the mela’s Additional District Magistrate told IANS that hundreds of organisations come forward to run them, and a government backgrounder later reported free meals served every day. See also daan at the Kumbh.
Cultural programmes
Governments put on music, dance and theatre. For Kumbh 2019 the Uttar Pradesh government set up five cultural pandals, with the Ganga Pandal as the main stage. At Maha Kumbh 2025 the Ministry of Culture ran Kalagram, with programmes curated by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, and at the 2016 Ujjain Simhastha it held a National Cultural Festival on four stages. The Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority’s first plan, marked tentative, outlines concerts, literature events and heritage programmes from 2026 to 2028.
Religious assemblies
The Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad was formed to keep harmony among the akharas and settle disputes between them. Before Haridwar 2021 and again before Haridwar 2027, PTI reported the Uttarakhand Chief Minister meeting the Parishad about the bathing dates. Religious leaders also hold assemblies called a dharma sansad: PTI photographed Shankaracharyas at one during the 2024 Magh Mela.
What a first-time visitor can watch with respect
Much of the Kumbh happens in public, and visitors can watch:
- The river aarti. At Haridwar the Ganga aarti is held every morning and evening; at Prayagraj, aartis are held on the Ganga, the Yamuna and at the Sangam. See the Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri.
- A procession, from where police and volunteers place you. Never cross between groups or touch flags and ritual objects.
- A satsang or pravachan. Some talks are open to all and others are private. Go in only where you are welcome.
- A cultural programme, where one is announced for your mela.
- Photographs: ask first, above all with sadhus, and take silence as a no. Read photographing ascetic traditions with respect.
Start with the exact place and year, check the authority’s dates and rules, and expect long walks on the main days. The first-time guides for Haridwar and Nashik cover planning.
