What happens on the day
- Before the day: Haridwar police announce a traffic plan shortly before each Amrit Snan. For the April 2021 shahi snans, the plan reported on 1 April kept vehicles out of the city from 8 to 15 April and sent them to outer parking by the direction they came from. The plan for 6 March 2027 has not been published.
- The tithi: Phalguna Krishna Trayodashi at sunrise, until 12:03 pm, then Chaturdashi, by the Tirth panchang for Haridwar. Mahashivratri is kept on the night when Chaturdashi prevails; the Tirth calendar puts that midnight period in the early hours of 7 March.
- Akhara processions: the akharas go to Har Ki Pauri in procession and bathe first, in an order and time slots the mela administration sets with them. Mahashivratri was a shahi snan at the 2021 Kumbh too, on 11 March 2021, and the Juna Akhara’s own calendar lists 6 March 2027 as one of its Amrit Snans. The 2027 order has not been announced.
- Everyone else: pilgrims bathe at the ghats the police direct them to. At the 2021 Kumbh, Har Ki Pauri was kept for the akharas while they bathed.
- Into the night: the official Haridwar Kumbh website describes the day with a holy dip at Har Ki Pauri, night-long prayers and special temple rituals. Shri Ganga Sabha holds the Ganga aarti at sunrise and sunset every day; how it runs on an Amrit Snan day has not been announced. See the Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri.
