Ujjain Simhastha Ghats: Ram Ghat and the Shipra Riverfront

Ram Ghat on the Shipra is the main ghat of the Ujjain Simhastha. The Ujjain district says the Simhastha's shahi snan takes place there. For 2028, Madhya Pradesh is building about 29 km of new ghats on both banks of the river.

Place facts are from the Ujjain district and Shri Mahakaleshwar temple websites. The new ghat works are as the Madhya Pradesh government reported them up to June 2026; they were not finished then. Bathing days and ghat arrangements for 2028 are not announced.

The Simhastha is planned for 27 March to 27 May 2028. No bathing date has been announced, and the state has not said which ghats will be open to the public on the main days.

Ram Ghat

Ram Ghat is on the Shipra in Ujjain’s old city. According to tradition, Lord Rama performed the last rites of his father here, and the ghat is named after him. The Ujjain district says the shahi snan of the Simhastha takes place at Ram Ghat.

Mahakaleshwar Temple is close by but is a separate visit. The temple’s website places the Harsiddhi temple between Mahakal to the east and Ram Ghat to the west. See Mahakaleshwar Temple and the Simhastha.

Ram Ghat is a place of worship all year. Respect the rituals you see, and ask before you photograph anyone. Read the Ram Ghat guide for the ghat through the year and what is known for 2028.

Triveni and the Navagraha temple

Triveni is on the Shipra, away from the old city. The Ujjain district says the Navagraha temple, dedicated to the nine planets, stands on the Triveni Ghat, and that it draws large numbers of pilgrims on new moon days that fall on a Saturday.

The temple’s website describes it as a Shani temple on the bank of the Shipra, says local people also call the place Triveni Tirtha, and puts it about 6 km from the main city.

The state’s new ghat project runs from this Shani temple to the Nagda bypass.

Other sacred places on the Shipra

Ujjain has many sacred sites along the river. These are the ones the district and the temple describe.

  • Mangalnath: a Shiva temple away from the city, looking over a wide stretch of the Shipra. According to the Matsya Purana it is the birthplace of Mars (Mangal), the district says.
  • Siddhavat: an ancient sacred place on the bank of the Shipra, also known as Shaktibhed Tirth (temple website).
  • Kal Bhairav: a temple on the bank of the Shipra, about 8 km from the city by the temple’s website. Liquor is offered to the deity as part of the ritual, the district says.
  • Bhartrihari Cave: on the upper bank of the Shipra, linked with King Bhartrihari and the Nath tradition (temple website).
  • Kaliadeh Palace: on the bank of the Shipra, with a Sun temple (Ujjain district).
  • Gaughat, Lalpul, Valmiki Dham and Siddhnath: riverside places named in the state’s plan for boat services, announced in May 2025.

A place being sacred on a normal day does not make it a Simhastha bathing point. The mela administration will decide which ghats are used, and how, on the main days.

New ghats for Simhastha 2028

These works are as the Madhya Pradesh government has described them in its own releases.

On 31 May 2025 the Chief Minister laid the foundation of about 29 km of ghats on both banks of the Shipra, from the Shani temple to the Nagda bypass, together with 21 barrages on the river. The state put the two works at Rs 864 crore.

At a review on 20 June 2026, the state gave the ghat project’s cost as Rs 778 crore, and these figures for its progress:

29.15 kmof new ghats planned, on both banks
About 7 kmof new ghats built
18.20 kmof retaining walls built
150+access points identified
  • Access: in June 2026 the Chief Minister asked for the ghats to be finished in phases, with access roads and parking.
  • Bridges: in April 2026 he asked for a separate bridge over the Shipra for pilgrims on foot; a new bridge from the Shani temple to Methia Road was approved at the same review.
  • Cleaner river water: the Kanh diversion, a 30.15 km closed duct, is meant to keep polluted water from the Kanh river away from the Shipra ghats in the city. In June 2026, 8.15 km of its 12 km tunnel had been dug.
  • Boats: services were announced from Valmiki Dham to Siddhnath, from the Shani temple to Gaughat and from Lalpul to Ram Ghat.
  • Deadline: the Chief Minister has set Diwali 2027 for all Simhastha works.
