The Basant Panchami snan of Magh Mela 2027 at the Sangam is expected on Thursday 11 February 2027, Magha Shukla Panchami. It is the fourth of the six main bathing days, five days after Mauni Amavasya.

The date and tithi come from the Hindu calendar (Tirth panchang). The date stays expected until the Prayagraj Mela Authority publishes its list of 2027 bathing days; on 18 October 2026 we found no such list from the mela authority, the district or the Uttar Pradesh government.

By tradition the day honours Saraswati, goddess of knowledge, and marks the turn of the season towards spring. At the mela, the mela authority says, kalpvasis dress in yellow for the day.

What Basant Panchami means by tradition

The Prayagraj Mela Authority describes Basant Panchami as the day that marks the change of seasons and the arrival of Saraswati, goddess of knowledge, in Hindu mythology. Across India it is kept as Saraswati Puja, and, as All India Radio put it in 2025, it marks the arrival of spring.

At Prayagraj the name has a second meaning. According to tradition, the Saraswati is also the unseen river that joins the Ganga and the Yamuna at the Sangam; the district says it is believed to flow underground.

In a Kumbh year Basant Panchami can be an Amrit Snan: at the 2025 Maha Kumbh it was the third and last. For the day across the Kumbhs, read Basant Panchami at the Kumbh.

How the day runs

  1. To the waterPilgrims walk across the riverbank to the bathing ghats laid out for the mela, or take a boat from the ghat near the fort out to the point where the Ganga and the Yamuna meet.
  2. At the meeting pointPriests sit on small platforms in the river, the district says, and help pilgrims with puja and the ritual bath.
  3. In yellowThe day falls in the second half of kalpvas, and kalpvasis mark it by wearing yellow.

  2. Expect to walkAt the 2025 Maha Kumbh, the mela authority kept vehicles out of the mela area from the day before to the day after each main bathing day, and put parking 1 to 2 km from the ghats. The traffic rules for 2027 have not been announced.
  3. Staying for Mauni Amavasya too?Mauni Amavasya comes five days earlier, on Saturday 6 February. If you plan to stay for both, check your stay covers both days before you book.
