What Mauni Amavasya means

Mauni Amavasya is the new moon of the month of Magha. Mauna means silence, and by tradition many devotees keep a vow of silence on this day as a practice of self-discipline, meditation and reflection. Sadhus, saints and kalpvasis keep the same maun vrat, which is described as a way to turn the mind inward. A dip in the Ganga on Mauni Amavasya is believed to wash away past sins and cleanse the soul.

The official Haridwar Kumbh website calls it one of the holiest days of the Kumbh. It describes saints leading spiritual processions, temples holding special prayers and pilgrims coming to the ghats for the holy bath, prayers and rituals of the day. The same new moon is also a bathing day of the Magh Mela at the Sangam in Prayagraj, so on Saturday 6 February 2027 the day is kept at both places.

How the day runs

  1. Before the dayThe district police announce road diversions and parking shortly before each big bathing day, and the mela administration publishes the day’s arrangements. Neither had been published for 6 February when we checked.
  2. Before the bathBy tradition, many pilgrims keep silence (mauna) until they have bathed. The official Haridwar Kumbh website describes the silence as a practice of self-discipline, meditation and reflection.
  3. Through the morningPilgrims bathe at Har Ki Pauri and the other ghats of Haridwar. The official website says saints lead spiritual processions and temples hold special prayers on the day; no programme has been published yet.
