What Magh Purnima means
Magh Purnima is the full moon of the month of Magha. The official Haridwar Kumbh website calls it a highly auspicious day for a dip in the Ganga, for prayers and for daan, charity given as an act of faith. Devotees believe that a bath on this day cleanses the mind and the soul, removes past sins and brings peace and spiritual growth.
The website describes the city on Magh Purnima as full of devotional chants, temple rituals, spiritual discourses and cultural programmes. Many devotees give daan and pray for the well-being of their families and of their ancestors. At Haridwar the Kumbh is said to begin from Magh Purnima. In 2027 the date needs one note. At sunrise on 20 February the tithi is still Chaturdashi, and the full-moon tithi begins later that morning. The mela administration lists the 20th as the bathing day.
