Chandi Devi Temple, Haridwar
The Chandi Devi Temple stands on top of Neel Parvat in the Shivalik Hills and is one of Haridwar's Panch Tirth, its five holy places. The footpath of about 3 km starts at Chandighat, across the river from Har Ki Pauri, and a ropeway also runs up the hill.
The temple and its traditions do not change from year to year. Temple hours are as listed by the Ministry of Tourism, and ropeway hours as shown on the operator's website, both read on 16 October 2026; they can change. Arrangements at the temple and the ropeway for the 2027 Kumbh are not announced.
According to tradition, this is where the goddess Chandi defeated the demon kings Shumbh and Nishumbh. It is a place of darshan, not a Kumbh bathing ghat.

The Chandi Devi tradition
The Ministry of Tourism tells the story behind the temple. The demon kings Shumbh and Nishumbh threatened the heavens, and the goddess Chandika emerged from the goddess Parvati to face them. She defeated their army chief, Chand Munda, and then the two kings. According to tradition the battle took place on Neel Parvat, and the temple stands there in its memory.
Pilgrims believe the goddess fulfils the wishes of those who come to her with an unfulfilled wish. The Ministry calls the temple a Siddha Peetha, one of three in Haridwar with the Mansa Devi and Maya Devi temples. Uttarakhand Tourism also counts it among the Siddhapeeth.
The Ministry says the present temple was built in 1929 by King Suchat Singh of Kashmir, and that by legend its main idol was installed by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. The ropeway operator’s website gives the same account. We have not found a second government source for the date.
Nagar Nigam Haridwar lists Neel Parvat (Chandi Devi) among Haridwar’s Panch Tirth, with Gangadwara (Har Ki Pauri), Kushwart Ghat, Kankhal and Bilwa Tirtha (Mansa Devi).
Getting up to the temple: the footpath and the ropeway
The Ministry of Tourism says the footpath begins at Chandighat and is about three kilometres long, a climb it rates as moderate. Chandi Ghat is a newer riverfront on the left bank of the Ganga, across from Har Ki Pauri, on the north side of the Chandighat bridge; our Chandi Ghat page has the details. The Ministry says the ghat takes its name from the goddess Chandi.
The ropeway is run by Usha Breco Limited under its Udan Khatola name. Its lower station is on Nazibabad Road, Haridwar, and it has run since 1997, according to the operator. The figures below are from the operator’s website, read on 16 October 2026.
- Ride: 767 metres long, rising 208 metres, in about 5 minutes, in cabins for four people. The operator says the climb by steps takes over an hour.
- Hours: 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The temple stays open later than the ropeway, so if you ride up, check the time of the last cabin down.
- Tickets: the operator sells a combined ticket for the Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi ropeways. Check the current fare at the counter or on the operator’s website.
- Tickets: sold at the ropeway and on the operator’s own website, udankhatola.com. One-way and return tickets are both available, the FAQ says.
- Access: the operator says a wheelchair is available at each of its ropeways and that passengers with disabilities get priority boarding.
- Rules: food is not allowed in the cabins, and in the monsoon the ropeway runs only when the weather allows.
Chandi Devi during the Kumbh
Nothing about the temple or the ropeway has been announced for 2027. This is what is known so far.
- The Haridwar Kumbh runs from Thursday 14 January to Tuesday 20 April 2027, with eleven bathing days at Har Ki Pauri listed on the official website (Provisional). All of them are on the dates page.
- Navratri is the temple’s key festival, according to the Ministry of Tourism. In 2027 Chaitra Navratri falls inside the Kumbh: it begins on Nav Samvatsar, Wednesday 7 April, and ends on Ram Navami, Thursday 15 April, both listed bathing days.
- In February 2026 the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for 34 Kumbh works. One of them is the development of pilgrim facilities on the Chandi Devi and Mansa Devi temple routes. That work has started, not finished. See Haridwar Kumbh updates.
- How Chandi Ghat, at the foot of the footpath, will be used on the bathing days is not announced. Amrit Snan days usually draw the most pilgrims to Haridwar; follow police and mela instructions on the day.
How Chandi Devi fits a Kumbh visit
The Chandi Devi Temple is a hill shrine for darshan. It does not take the place of a bath at Har Ki Pauri or at another ghat the mela administration opens for the day. The Haridwar ghats guide explains the wider holy area.
The ropeway operator sells a combined ticket with the Mansa Devi ropeway on the other side of the river. Check hours and fares at the ropeway or on the operator’s website on the day you go.
