Maya Devi and the story of Sati
The Ministry of Tourism says Haridwar was once called Mayapuri, in reverence to Maya Devi, the patron goddess of the city. Uttarakhand Tourism says the temple is considered very sacred by devotees.
The temple’s legend begins with the story told at Kankhal. According to tradition, Sati gave up her life in the fire of her father Daksha’s yagna after he insulted Lord Shiva. Shiva carried her body across the earth, and Lord Vishnu divided it with his Sudarshan Chakra. The places where the parts fell became the Shaktipeeths, and the Ministry says the heart and navel of Sati fell where the Maya Devi Temple stands.
Pilgrims believe Maya Devi grants the wishes of those who come to her with devotion. The Ministry of Tourism counts the temple with Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi as Haridwar’s three Siddh Peeths, and Uttarakhand Tourism calls the three the Siddhapeeth triangle.
Inside the temple
The Ministry of Tourism describes three idols in the inner sanctum: Maya Devi at the centre, Kali on the left and Kamakhya on the right. The temple also has a metal idol of Chamunda and a small shrine to Sheetala Devi.
The Ministry says the temple was established in the eleventh century, is built in a traditional North Indian style, and stands with two other old temples, the Narayana-Shila Temple and the Bhairava Temple. We have not found a second official source for the date.
