Basant Panchami is the fifth day of the bright half of Magha. In tradition it marks the turn of the season towards spring and honours Saraswati, goddess of knowledge. At the winter Kumbhs of Prayagraj and Haridwar it is one of the main bathing days.
What the day means in tradition
Basant Panchami, also called Saraswati Puja, is kept across India. People worship Saraswati as the goddess of wisdom and knowledge, and the day is taken as the arrival of spring.
The Prayagraj Mela Authority describes the day in the same way: a change of season, and the arrival of Saraswati, goddess of knowledge, in Hindu mythology. It adds that kalpvasis, the pilgrims who spend the month of Magha by the river, dress in bright yellow to mark the day.
At Prayagraj the name Saraswati also belongs to a river. By tradition, the Sangam is where the Ganga and the Yamuna meet the unseen Saraswati. On this day pilgrims bathe there, at the Kumbh or at the yearly Magh Mela.
Where Basant Panchami is a Kumbh bathing day
Basant Panchami falls in January or February, so it matters only to the Kumbhs held in winter.
| Kumbh | Basant Panchami | What the day is |
|---|---|---|
| Prayagraj Maha Kumbh 2025 | Monday 3 February 2025 (held) | The third and last Amrit Snan, led by the akharas |
| Prayagraj Magh Mela 2027 | Thursday 11 February 2027 (expected) | A main bathing day of the yearly Magh Mela; not yet listed by the mela authority |
| Haridwar Kumbh 2027 | Thursday 11 February 2027 (provisional) | A main bathing day, not an Amrit Snan |
| Nashik and Trimbakeshwar 2027 | Not a bathing day | The main baths are in August and September 2027 |
| Ujjain Simhastha 2028 | Not a bathing day | It falls before the proposed window of 27 March to 27 May 2028 |
The tithi at sunrise on 11 February 2027 is Magha Shukla Panchami, from the Tirth panchang. At Haridwar the four Amrit Snans come later, on 6, 8 and 15 March and 14 April 2027.
Basant Panchami at the 2025 Maha Kumbh
On 3 February 2025 the akharas’ procession for the Amrit Snan included Naga sadhus on horseback and on foot, according to the Ministry of Culture.
The date also shows why the mela’s own list matters. All India Radio reported the national greetings for Basant Panchami on 2 February 2025, but the mela held its Basant Panchami bath on 3 February. A tithi has its own start and end times, so the festival and the bath can fall on different calendar days. Go by the bathing day the mela lists.
Planning for Basant Panchami
- It comes five days after Mauni Amavasya. In 2027 the two fall on 6 and 11 February at both Haridwar and Prayagraj, so many pilgrims may stay for both.
- Main bathing days usually draw the most pilgrims. Follow police and mela instructions on the day.
- Wearing yellow is a custom, not a rule.
For the day at Haridwar, see the Basant Panchami snan page, and for the bath itself, the Kumbh snan guide.
