Tapovan, Nashik: Where the Sadhugram Stands in a Simhastha
Tapovan is a riverside area of Nashik on the Godavari, a short distance from Panchavati. For the 2027 Simhastha, the Nashik sadhugram, the camp where akharas and sadhus stay, is planned in the Tapovan area, according to news reports in 2025 and 2026.
Place facts are from the Ministry of Tourism's Incredible India site. The sadhugram's location in Tapovan is from news reports (Free Press Journal, 6 August 2026; Outlook, 29 November 2025). The Kumbh Mela Authority's plan of 15 June 2026 calls the sadhugram's area tentative, and the 2027 camp layout is not announced.
The name means forest of meditation. According to tradition, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana spent part of their exile here.

What Tapovan is known for
Tapovan comes from tapas, meditation, and vana, forest. According to tradition, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana spent part of their 14-year exile in this area, and Panchavati, where Rama is said to have built his hut, was part of a larger Tapovan forest, the Ministry of Tourism’s Incredible India site notes.
A legend also links the sage Agastya with meditation here. Today the area has several old temples and ashrams along the river.

The sadhugram: the akhara camp
In a Simhastha, the akharas, khalsas and other groups of sadhus live in a temporary camp called the sadhugram. The Nashik district lists it among the temporary facilities built for the mela, alongside water, power, sanitation and health services.
News reports say the 2027 Nashik sadhugram is planned in the Tapovan area. In August 2026 the Free Press Journal reported that land acquisition for the Sadhugram project in Tapovan had been fast-tracked, under a government resolution of 5 June 2026.
The final layout, the plot for each group and any rules for visitors are not announced.
- The sadhugram is where sadhus live and keep their practices. Visit with respect.
- Ask before you take photographs of anyone.
- Follow the police and the rules at each camp.
Tapovan on big days and in the monsoon
Tapovan is by the river, and the Simhastha falls in the monsoon. The Kumbh Mela Authority’s plan lists floods and heavy rainfall among the hazards it plans for, and proposes fire watch towers near the sadhugram and Tapovan.
Expect road closures in and around the camp on big days, especially on Amrit Snan days (2 August, 31 August and 11 September 2027 in Nashik). The 2027 procession routes are not announced.
- Watch the Nashik district’s river-level alerts in heavy rain.
- Agree a meeting point with your group before you enter a crowded area.
