The basic routes on this page do not change from year to year. Kumbh 2027 transport arrangements, such as special trains, extra flights, parking, shuttles and road closures, have not been announced. Train details come from NTES and flight details from the Airports Authority of India's Dehradun schedule, checked on 16 October 2026; timetables change.

It is a journey of more than a day. Book when the 60-day reservation window opens, and aim to reach Haridwar the day before a big bathing day.

By train from Mumbai

NTES listed four direct trains from Mumbai to Haridwar Junction when we checked on 16 October 2026. None leaves from CSMT or Mumbai Central, so check your station.

  • The Haridwar district travel guide also names Mumbai among the cities with direct trains to Haridwar.
  • Timetables change. Check your train on NTES or IRCTC before you book, and again the day before you travel.
  • No special Kumbh trains for 2027 have been announced. As of 16 October 2026 we found no Indian Railways notice of extra trains for the mela. Book only what IRCTC shows, not a train you read about in a forwarded message.
  • The official Haridwar Kumbh website lists eight stations in and around Haridwar, including Haridwar Junction, Jwalapur, Roorkee and Laksar Junction. Check where your train stops and how you will get from there to your stay.

Daily: the Bandra Terminus to Haridwar Express (19019), leaving Bandra Terminus (BDTS) just after midnight and stopping at Borivali, about 31 hours 30 minutes.

Mondays and Thursdays: the LTT to Haridwar AC Express (12171) from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), about 28 hours 40 minutes, with AC classes only.

Wednesdays: the Bandra Terminus to Haridwar Superfast Express (22917), about 25 hours 45 minutes.

Saturdays: the Thiruvananthapuram to Yog Nagari Rishikesh Superfast Express (22659), which you board at Panvel (PNVL), about 26 hours.

By air: Dehradun or Delhi

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) runs Dehradun airport, also called Jolly Grant Airport. Its flight schedule for Dehradun airport for October 2026 lists direct flights from Mumbai on every day of the week, run by two airlines, and from Navi Mumbai on some days.

AAI says the times in its schedule are tentative and should be checked with the airline. That schedule runs only to late October 2026, and flights for January to April 2027 had not been published, so check what the airlines fly in your month before you plan around a flight.

The Haridwar district and the official Kumbh website put the airport about 37 km from Haridwar, and the official site lists taxis and private vehicles for the transfer. On a big bathing day a taxi may only be able to reach parking outside the centre. The Dehradun guide covers the airport road and the train from Dehradun station.

You can also fly to Delhi and go on by train or bus. Check whether a direct flight to Delhi suits you, and allow time to get from the airport to your Delhi station or to Kashmiri Gate ISBT. NTES lists trains from five Delhi stations to Haridwar, taking about 3.5 to 8.5 hours, and Uttarakhand Transport Corporation runs buses from Kashmiri Gate; see the Delhi to Haridwar guide.

Planning a long journey: when to book and when to arrive

From Mumbai the train takes more than a day, so book as soon as you can and plan to arrive early.

Since 1 November 2024, Indian Railways opens reserved train bookings 60 days ahead, not counting the day of the journey. Count back from the day your train leaves Mumbai, not the day you reach Haridwar. Our Haridwar Kumbh by train guide explains the stations and the Tatkal rules.

All four Mumbai trains arrive the day after they leave, so leaving two days before a bathing day gets you there the day before. The daily train leaves Bandra Terminus just after midnight, so a ticket dated 12 January means boarding late on the night of 11 January. IRCTC shows the exact opening date for each train. Flights are not covered by this rule; airlines open their own bookings.

Arrive the day before

Aim to reach Haridwar the day before a big bathing day, not on the morning itself, and book a stay you can walk to the ghats from.

Check the running day

Only the daily trains run every day, so the train you want may not leave on the date in the table. Pick a day it runs, and count again.

Book the return too

In 2021, extra trains were added out of Haridwar on the main bathing days. Book your way home when you book your way there.

Do not count on Tatkal

Tatkal opens only one day before the train leaves its starting station, at 10:00 for AC classes and 11:00 for non-AC classes.

Plan for the busy stretches

The Amrit Snans on 6 and 8 March are two days apart, the next comes on 15 March, and Ram Navami (15 April) follows the main Amrit Snan on 14 April. All the bathing days are provisional, so choose tickets you can change or cancel.

What changes on big bathing days

This is how the last Haridwar Kumbh, in 2021, was handled. The plan for 2027 has not been published, and it may be different.

  • Vehicle entry was restricted. Kumbh police restricted vehicles entering Haridwar from 8 to 15 April 2021, around the main baths on 12 and 14 April. Two-wheelers were stopped at the entry points too.
  • Traffic from Dehradun and Rishikesh was parked outside the centre. Vehicles from Dehradun and Rishikesh, the side you come from if you land at Jolly Grant, were sent to the Dudhiyabandh parking, with Motichur and Saptarishi used when it filled.
  • Traffic from Delhi was diverted. Light vehicles from the Delhi side were turned off the main highway at Purkazi and sent via Laksar, and vehicles from Delhi, Meerut and Muzaffarnagar were sent to the Daksh Dweep parking.
  • Shuttles from parking. Shuttle buses were planned to carry people on from the parking areas. Even so, expect to walk the last stretch to the ghats.
  • Extra trains ran out of Haridwar. Northern Railway said 25 special trains would leave Haridwar for various destinations on the Shahi Snan days of 12, 14 and 27 April 2021. It announced them on 9 April, three days before the first of those baths, so do not wait for special trains before you book.
  • The plan started early. The traffic plan came into force a few days before each main bath.

What is planned for 2027

A July 2026 news report says the mela administration is planning temporary bus stations, more buses and shuttle services. None of this is final. The official Haridwar Kumbh website has sections for shuttles, park-and-ride and walking routes, but on 16 October 2026 it gave no routes, parking places or closure dates.

Before you leave home

Check the official website and Haridwar police updates. The where to stay guide helps you pick an area you can walk from, and the ghats guide shows where you can bathe.

Haridwar bathing days to plan your journey around

The official Haridwar Kumbh website lists eleven bathing days, from 14 January to 20 April 2027, and marks four of them as Amrit Snans. All are provisional until a government notice confirms them. Amrit Snan days usually draw the most pilgrims; follow police and mela instructions on the day.
