Brahmakund at Har Ki Pauri: Why the Kumbh Centres Here

Brahmakund is the especially sacred section of Har Ki Pauri where, according to tradition, drops of amrit fell. Haridwar's district account links the Kumbh to a dip here, which is why the mela centres on this stretch of the Ganga.

The traditions on this page do not change from year to year. Access to Brahmakund on the 2027 Kumbh bathing days has not been announced.

It is one part of Har Ki Pauri, not a separate ghat. On the main Kumbh bathing days, who can reach it and when depends on the official plan for that day.

Why the Kumbh centres at Brahmakund

Haridwar’s district website tells the Kumbh story this way. When the pot of amrit (the Amrita Kalasha) came out of the churning of the ocean, four gods carried it away from the asuras and set it down at four places: Haridwar, Prayag, Ujjain and Nashik. Another Puranic version, the same page says, is that the pot was knocked in the fight and amrit fell at those four places.

The district’s history page adds that the drops fell into Brahmakund at Har Ki Pauri. So a dip in Brahmakund is held to be very auspicious, and the Kumbh is held at Haridwar when Jupiter comes into Kumbha (Aquarius), about once in twelve years.

The Ministry of Tourism’s Incredible India site gives a third version: that the drops fell from a pot carried by Garuda, Lord Vishnu’s mount. The versions differ, and all of them are tradition, not history. Read more on our mythology and origin and four Kumbh places pages.

Other traditions linked with Brahmakund

The district says Haridwar is believed to be sanctified by Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh, and that Lord Vishnu’s footprint is on a stone set in the upper wall of Har Ki Pauri, where the Ganga touches it. Incredible India says the three gods are believed to have visited Brahmakund itself.

Even the state tourism board, when it describes the newer Chandi Ghat, says that ghat cannot compare with Brahma Kund and Har Ki Pauri in religious importance.

Brahmakund on a Kumbh bathing day

These are general points from past Kumbhs. The official plan for each 2027 bathing day will decide the details.

  • On Amrit Snan days the akharas bathe first at the main ghat, in an order the mela administration sets with them.
  • Everyone else bathes at the ghat the police direct them to. On the busiest days that may not be Brahmakund.
  • The 2027 Amrit Snans are on 6 March, 8 March, 15 March and 14 April (Provisional). The other bathing days are on the dates page.
  • If bathing at Brahmakund itself matters to your family, consider a bathing day that is not an Amrit Snan, and follow the instructions on site.
  • Agree a meeting point with your group that is away from the water’s edge and easy to see.

What is not announced yet

  • Whether Brahmakund will be open to the public on each bathing day, and at what times
  • Entry and exit routes into the Har Ki Pauri area
  • Any separate arrangement for older people or wheelchair users

We found no official description of the steps, railings or step-free access at Brahmakund. The official Haridwar Kumbh website is haridwarkumbh.uk.gov.in. We add each detail here, with its source, when it is published.
