Vishnu Ghat is one of the popular bathing ghats on the Ganga in Haridwar, listed by the state tourism board alongside Har Ki Pauri. The Ministry of Tourism's Incredible India site names it among the ghats near the main ghat area, as a place for a holy dip.

What is known about Vishnu Ghat

Uttarakhand Tourism lists Vishnu Ghat with Har Ki Pauri, Ganesh Ghat, Birla Ghat and Gau Ghat as popular ghats where pilgrims and visitors bathe in the Ganga. It is believed, the board adds, that the Ganga can wash away sins.

The Ministry of Tourism’s Incredible India site names Vishnu Ghat, Gau Ghat, Kushavarta Ghat and Birla Ghat as other ghats close to the main ghat area, and describes Vishnu Ghat as a sacred spot for a holy dip.

Travel writers give different stories for the name, for example that Lord Vishnu bathed or meditated here. We have not found an official source for them, so we do not repeat them as fact.

Vishnu Ghat on a Kumbh bathing day

The official plan for each 2027 bathing day will say which ghats are open. Nothing has been announced about Vishnu Ghat yet. These general points apply at any Haridwar ghat.

On Amrit Snan days the akharas bathe first at the main ghat. Other pilgrims bathe at the ghat the police direct them to.
In a September 2025 review, the Chief Minister directed that every ghat should have lifeguards, safety ropes and motor boats during the Kumbh. Bathe only where these are in place, and stay close to the steps.
Roads into the mela area usually close the night before a big bathing day, so plan to walk.
Leave by the marked exit route, not the way you came in.
