Both names are in use. By the usual pattern, Haridwar 2027 is an Ardh Kumbh, six years after the 2021 Kumbh, and the Press Trust of India calls it that. The Uttarakhand government calls it Haridwar Kumbh 2027, and its own website uses both names. It is the same mela, with the same dates.
Why it would usually be called Ardh Kumbh
In the common explanation, a full Kumbh returns to the same place about every twelve years, and an Ardh Kumbh, or “half Kumbh”, is held at Haridwar and Prayagraj about six years in between. Haridwar’s municipal corporation says the same: the Kumbh every 12 years, and the Ardh Kumbh every six.
The official Haridwar Kumbh website’s timeline lists the Kumbh Mela at Haridwar in 1986, 1998, 2010 and 2021. The 2027 mela falls six years after 2021, the slot the Ardh Kumbh usually fills. The gap between 2010 and 2021 was eleven years, a reminder that, in tradition, the timing follows the positions of Jupiter, the Sun and the Moon rather than a fixed count.

Governments have renamed a Kumbh before
This has happened before. For Prayagraj in 2019, the six-year gathering that earlier usage called Ardh Kumbh was officially called Kumbh, according to a Government of India backgrounder from that year. The same backgrounder records a move to call the twelve-year Prayagraj gathering Maha Kumbh, the name used in 2025. Event names follow the authority of the day, so the traditional label and the official title do not always match.
Does the name change anything for pilgrims?
No. The bathing days, the ghats and the arrangements are the same whatever the event is called. The official website lists eleven bathing days, from Thursday 14 January to Tuesday 20 April 2027, with four Amrit Snans on 6 March, 8 March, 15 March and 14 April, the last being the main Amrit Snan. The April 2026 announcement reported by PTI had named ten days and three Amrit Snans, so the list has already changed once. Treat every day as provisional until a formal, dated notice.
Two practical points: search for both names when you look for news, and use the name the authority prints when you check a booking or a notice. A seller’s claim that this is a rare or special Kumbh is not a reason to pay in a hurry. Whether you think of it as an Ardh Kumbh or a Kumbh, plan around the dates the mela administration publishes, and book travel and stays you can change.
