How the dates were set
The opening, Nagar Pradakshina and Amrit Snan dates were set at a meeting in Nashik chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis with seers of the 13 akharas and representatives of the Purohit Sangh, as reported on 1 June 2025. The Kumbh Mela Authority’s plan of 15 June 2026 lists the opening, the three Amrit Snans and the closing.
The authority calls its plan interim and subject to revision. We recheck every date against later notices and change this page when one changes.
Why it runs for almost two years
The plan describes the Simhastha as an extended event of about 20 months and 3 weeks, counted from the flag hoisting, with a core mela period of 107 days from June to September 2027. The Amrit Snans fall inside that core period, in the monsoon.
The name Simhastha comes from Simha (Leo), the sign linked with Jupiter at the time. Read how the Kumbh dates are set and what dhwajarohan means.
