Nashik–Trimbakeshwar Simhastha · Getting there

Mumbai to Nashik for the Kumbh: Train, Bus or Car

From Mumbai, the realistic options are a train to Nashik Road (about 3 to 3.5 hours on most trains), an MSRTC bus from Dadar, Borivali or Thane, or a car or taxi on the Mumbai–Agra highway.

EvergreenChecked on Fri 16 Oct 2026

The basic routes on this page do not change from year to year. Kumbh 2027 transport arrangements, such as special trains, extra buses, parking, shuttles and road closures, have not been announced. The Kumbh Mela Authority's interim plan outlines them but marks its figures as tentative. Train and bus details come from NTES and MSRTC timetables, checked on 16 October 2026; timetables change.

The Kumbh has two bathing centres, about 28 to 30 km apart by road: Ramkund in Nashik city, by Panchavati, and Kushavarta in the separate town of Trimbakeshwar. Plan your last stretch to the one you need. Nashik Road station is about 10 km from Ramkund.

By train

Indian Railways’ NTES enquiry listed 93 trains from Mumbai stations to Nashik Road (NK) when we checked on 16 October 2026. 28 of them run daily, and most take about 3 to 3.5 hours.

  • Daily trains from CSMT: the Tapovan Express (17617) early in the morning, the Jan Shatabdi (12071) around midday, and the Panchavati Express (12109) and Rajya Rani Express (17612) in the evening, each about 3 hours 20 minutes.
  • Vande Bharat: two Vande Bharat trains from CSMT, 22223 in the morning and 20706 in the afternoon, run six days a week and take about 2 hours 40 minutes to 3 hours.
  • LTT, Dadar and Panvel: many long-distance trains to northern and eastern India leave from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), and a few from Dadar and Panvel. Many run only once or twice a week, and some are on-demand specials.
  • Kalyan: NTES also lists 93 trains from Kalyan Junction to Nashik Road, so you can board there if it is closer.
  • Check before you go: timetables change. Check your train on NTES or IRCTC before you book, and again on the day you travel.
  • No Kumbh specials yet: no list of special Kumbh trains for 2027 has been published. The Kumbh Mela Authority’s interim plan expects extra trains on peak days, including short-distance MEMU trains towards Mumbai about every 20 minutes. As of 16 October 2026 we found no Indian Railways timetable for them.

By bus

MSRTC, the Maharashtra state bus service, runs buses between Mumbai and Nashik through the day. Its 2025 timetable for the Mahamarg bus stand in Nashik lists more than a dozen daily buses each to Dadar and Borivali, including Shivshahi and Shivai electric buses, and others to Thane, Kalyan and Panvel. Book on npublic.msrtcors.com, or at the bus stand for buses not sold online.

Nashik has more than one bus stand, so check which one your bus uses and how you will get on to your stay.

By car

By car, the Mumbai–Agra national highway passes through Nashik, the district website says. The Samruddhi Mahamarg, the Mumbai–Nagpur expressway, opened its last stretch, from Amane in Thane district to Igatpuri in Nashik district, in June 2025. Check the exit and the onward road on a current map before you use it.

The authority’s plan marks a Mumbai road approach into both Nashik and Trimbakeshwar, with outer parking on the way in. On Amrit Snan days, expect to park outside and take a shuttle.

The last stretch: Ramkund or Trimbakeshwar

The Nashik Kumbh has two bathing centres. Ramkund is in Nashik city. Kushavarta is in Trimbakeshwar, a separate town about 28 to 30 km away by road.

  1. Pick one centre for your dayDo not plan Ramkund and Kushavarta on the same day. Pick one centre and stay near it the night before. The third Amrit Snan is split: Saturday 11 September 2027 at Ramkund and Sunday 12 September at Kushavarta. See the Kushavarta guide and where to stay.
  2. On to RamkundOn a normal day it is about 10 km from Nashik Road station and about 2 to 3 km from Nashik’s Central Bus Stand, according to the Nashik district. See the Ramkund guide.
  3. Or on to TrimbakeshwarMSRTC’s Trimbakeshwar timetable, in force from March 2025, lists a shuttle bus to and from Nashik every 30 minutes from early morning to late evening, plus electric buses. Nashik Road station is about 40 km from Trimbakeshwar, the district says. The same timetable lists one bus a day each way between Trimbakeshwar and Thane, and between Trimbakeshwar and Parel or Dadar.
  4. Driving to TrimbakeshwarThe authority’s plan names a Ghoti, Igatpuri and Trimbakeshwar road corridor for a traffic study, and its Trimbakeshwar map marks a Mumbai road approach. Check the 2027 traffic plan before you drive this way.
  5. On an Amrit Snan day, park and walkExpect to leave your vehicle at outer parking, take a shuttle in, and walk the last stretch to the ghat. See what changes on those days, below.

What changes on Amrit Snan days

This is how traffic was handled at the last Simhastha, in 2015, and what the authority has planned for 2027. The 2027 traffic plan has not been published, and it may change.

Trains. Indian Railways plans to handle Kumbh passengers at Nashik Road, Devlali, Odha, Kherwadi and Kasbe Sukene, All India Radio reported in July 2025. The plan’s railway section expects 55 to 60 short-distance trains a day for about five days around each Amrit Snan, about one every 20 minutes, with MEMU trains towards Mumbai. It marks all its figures as tentative.

Nothing is final yet. As of 16 October 2026 we found no published list of Kumbh special trains or extra buses, and no parking sites or road-closure dates for 2027. Book only what NTES, IRCTC or the state bus services show, not a train or bus you read about in a forwarded message.

Nashik bathing days fall in the monsoon

The three Amrit Snans fall in August and September 2027, in the middle of the monsoon. Plan your journey around the dates, and around the rain.

Rain can change plans at short notice. On 24 July 2026 the Godavari crossed the danger mark at Nashik after water was released from Gangapur dam, and the Ramkund area was to stay closed for two days, PTI reported. On 7 July 2026, after a warning of very heavy rain, the Trimbakeshwar temple was closed to devotees for the day. In the same month, heavy rain waterlogged roads in Trimbakeshwar town, and a landslide blocked part of the Trimbak to Palghar road.

Which days fall in your trip?

The three Amrit Snans are on 2 August, 31 August and 11 and 12 September 2027, in the Kumbh Mela Authority’s plan, which it marks as interim. The Nashik Kumbh dates page has each day with its tithi. Pick your month and who is coming to see which days fall in your trip.
