Food and Prasad at the Kumbh: Bhandaras, Local Dishes and Rules

At the Kumbh, free meals at bhandaras and langars, run by akharas, ashrams, trusts and residents, are part of the tradition. Each city also has its own dishes, and its temples their prasad.

EvergreenChecked on Wed 21 Oct 2026

Dishes are from district and tourism websites. Rules and arrangements say whether they are in force, announced, or what happened at an earlier mela.

Meat and liquor are banned near the bathing places: within 5 km of Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar, in the mela area at Maha Kumbh 2025, and across Ujjain's urban limits since April 2025.

Bhandara and langar: the free meal

Giving food is part of the Kumbh tradition. The Prayagraj Mela Authority describes donations to the poor, the helpless and to saints as a prominent part of the festival, from basic food and clothing upward. A bhandara is a free community meal given in this spirit. Before Maha Kumbh 2025 a mela official said hundreds of organisations come forward at such festivals to run free langars and bhandaras, at major crossroads, corners and streets across the city.

Langar is the Sikh name for a free community kitchen. The Ministry of Tourism describes the langar at the Golden Temple as a kitchen where volunteers prepare and serve free meals to all visitors, in the Sikh spirit of seva and equality, and says every gurdwara has one. At the Kumbh the word is used more widely: in 2019 the government reported langars set up by local residents to give food and refreshment to pilgrims on the way to the Sangam.

Who runs them

Bhandaras are run by akharas, ashrams, trusts and groups of pilgrims. Before Maha Kumbh 2025 IANS reported free meals being prepared at Juna Akhara, Awahan Akhara and other camps, and The Tribune reported volunteer groups from Punjab taking supplies to Prayagraj to run bhandaras. In an akhara camp, by custom, the stove is lit and food prasad cooked only after the akhara’s flag, the dharma dhwaja, is installed.

Kalpvasis at the Magh Mela keep the practice too: on Maghi Purnima in February 2026 they heard the Satyanarayan katha in their camps, held bhandaras and shared prasad before leaving. Some temples run free kitchens all year. At Ujjain the Mahakaleshwar temple committee has run a free Annakshetra since 2 August 2004, serving prasadi meals to devotees every day.
