Veni daan is the offering of hair at the Sangam in Prayagraj. Sources describe two forms: a full head shave, keeping only the shikha, which the mela authority says a kalpvasi is expected to perform at the Kumbh, and a rite for married couples in which a part of the wife’s braid is offered to the river.
Veni daan as the mela authority describes it
The Prayagraj Mela Authority’s page on the rituals of the Kumbh calls veni daan an important rite of the Kumbh at Prayagraj. The person shaves the whole head, keeps only the shikha (the tuft of hair at the crown), and offers the hair to the Ganga.
The page also gives the belief behind it. Sin is thought to rest at the roots of the hair, and the Sangam during the Kumbh is held to be the place to be freed of it. It says a kalpvasi is expected to perform veni daan at Prayagraj during the Kumbh, and to wear clean silk or woollen clothes in white or yellow.
A Government of India backgrounder written before Maha Kumbh 2025 lists veeni daan, which it explains as offering hair to the Ganga, beside shraddh for ancestors among the rites at the heart of the festival. Both spellings, veni and veeni, are used.

A second form is kept by married couples. The heritage archive of INTACH, the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage, describes it as performed only at the Sangam, particularly by Hindu couples from Maharashtra. The couple repeats the rites of their wedding, seeking a long marriage and renewing a promise to stay together for seven lives.
The archive describes the central act. The husband combs and braids his wife’s hair, and then a third of the braid is cut off and offered to the waters of the Sangam. In January 2025, ahead of the Maha Kumbh, the news agency ANI reported couples from Maharashtra and South India coming to the Sangam ghat for this rite. The priest who conducted it told ANI that it is done mainly by families from those regions, and that it happens only in Prayagraj.

Where veni daan fits in a pilgrim’s rites
At Prayag, rites like this are usually led by a tirth purohit, one of the Prayagwal family priests of the city. The mela authority’s page on the Prayagwals sets out the order of the rites they perform for visiting pilgrims:
The order of rites, as the mela authority lists it
- A visit to Beni Madhava
- The sankalpA stated intention
- MundanHead-shaving
- The bath
- Pind daanFor ancestors
- GiftsSuch as bedding, a cow or land
Beni Madhava, or Veni Madhav, is one of the city’s old Madhav shrines, at Daraganj, according to the district. When the Prime Minister spoke at Prayagraj in December 2024, he recited a Sanskrit verse that names Venimadhav beside the Triveni, the Akshayavat and Nagaraj Vasuki as what makes Prayag the king of tirthas.
Customs differ from family to family, and from one priest to another. If your family has a purohit at Prayag, he is the person to ask which form of veni daan your family keeps, and on which day.
Veni daan and the Magh Mela 2027
The mela authority ties the kalpvasi’s veni daan to the Kumbh, and the couples’ rites in the ANI report took place in the run-up to Maha Kumbh 2025. The next gathering at Prayagraj is the yearly Magh Mela, expected from 15 January to 6 March 2027. On 16 October 2026 we found no arrangements for 2027 from the mela authority, such as where the shave can be done or which ghats will be open, so check locally and follow the instructions of the mela staff.
For the place itself, read the Sangam at Prayagraj. For the month of camp life that goes with the kalpvasi’s rite, see kalpvas explained, and for the gifts that follow the bath, daan at the Kumbh.
