Mauni Amavasya is the new moon of the month of Magha. By tradition it is kept with silence and a river bath, and the Prayagraj Mela Authority describes it as the day that draws the largest gathering of pilgrims to the Kumbh.
Why silence
Maun means silence, and amavasya is the new moon night. By tradition, sadhus, saints and kalpvasis keep a maun vrat, a vow of silence, on this day. In the tradition’s own terms, the vow is a way to deepen concentration and connect with the inner self, and keeping quiet is not only holding back speech but saving one’s energy.
One common explanation links the vow to the moon. In Hindu astrology the moon governs the mind, and on amavasya, when the moon cannot be seen, the mind is said to be easily unsettled. Silence is kept to steady it. In one practice described for the day, the devotee bathes in the Ganga before dawn, in Brahma Muhurat, then takes the vow of silence, and breaks the fast with simple sattvik food only after the amavasya tithi ends. Customs differ, and families follow their own.
The Prayagraj Mela Authority adds a story of its own. It links the day with Rishabh Dev, whom it calls one of the first sages, and says he ended a long vow of silence by bathing at the Sangam.
Why so many pilgrims come
Three things come together on this day:
- Belief about the sky. The mela authority says it is believed that the planets are most favourable for bathing in the holy river on Mauni Amavasya.
- The month of Magha. The day falls during the yearly Magh Mela at Prayagraj, when kalpvasis are already living by the Sangam. By tradition, their month runs from Paush Purnima to Maghi Purnima. See kalpvas explained.
- An Amrit Snan in a Kumbh year. At the 2025 Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, Mauni Amavasya was the second of three Amrit Snans, the baths led by the akharas. The other two were Makar Sankranti and Basant Panchami.
Mauni Amavasya at each Kumbh
| Kumbh | Mauni Amavasya | What the day is |
|---|---|---|
| Prayagraj Magh Mela 2027 | Saturday 6 February 2027 (expected) | A main bathing day of the yearly Magh Mela; not yet listed by the mela authority |
| Haridwar Kumbh 2027 | Saturday 6 February 2027 (provisional) | A main bathing day, not an Amrit Snan |
| Nashik and Trimbakeshwar 2027 | Not a bathing day | The main baths are in August and September 2027 |
| Ujjain Simhastha 2028 | Not a bathing day | It falls before the proposed window of 27 March to 27 May 2028 |
The tithi at sunrise on 6 February 2027 is Magha Amavasya, from the Tirth panchang. At Haridwar the four Amrit Snans come later, on 6, 8 and 15 March and 14 April 2027.
Planning for Mauni Amavasya
- Mauni Amavasya and the Amrit Snan days usually draw the most pilgrims. Follow police and mela instructions on the day.
- Arrive the day before, and expect road closures and a walk from outer parking on main bathing days.
- Basant Panchami comes five days later, on Thursday 11 February 2027 at both Haridwar and Prayagraj. Read Basant Panchami at the Kumbh if you plan to stay for both.
For the day itself at Haridwar, see the Mauni Amavasya snan page, and for how the bath works, the Kumbh snan guide.
