For most pilgrims, one full day is enough for a dip on an ordinary bathing day, about three days suits an Amrit Snan, and a week or more suits those who want camps, discourses and a slower pace. What decides it is less the bath than the roads: on the biggest days, vehicle access can close from the day before.
One day: an ordinary bathing day
You do not have to come on a named date to bathe. The official Haridwar Kumbh website describes a general snan, the daily dip pilgrims take apart from the major bathing dates. If you live a few hours away and choose a day that is not an Amrit Snan, a day trip can work. Start early, keep the plan simple and leave time to get back before dark.
A day trip does not suit an Amrit Snan. For the Magh Purnima bath at Maha Kumbh 2025, the mela area became a no-vehicle zone from the morning of the day before, open only to essential and emergency services, and Prayagraj Sangam station was closed for a time around the major bathing dates.
About three days: for an Amrit Snan
Arrive the day before, bathe on the day, and leave the day after, once the crowds thin. Closures can last longer than one day. In 2021, the Haridwar mela police barred vehicles from entering the city from 8 to 15 April, around the Shahi Snans. Vehicles went to temporary parking, and shuttle buses were planned for passengers. The official Haridwar site’s stay page tells pilgrims to expect higher demand and movement restrictions during a major snan.

A week or more: camps, satsang and kalpvas
A Kumbh is more than one bath. It runs for weeks or months, with akhara camps, satsang and morning and evening aartis between the bathing days. Haridwar’s Kumbh runs from Thursday 14 January to Tuesday 20 April 2027, with eleven bathing days. The Nashik–Trimbakeshwar Simhastha opens with the flag hoisting on 31 October 2026 and runs to July 2028, with its main bathing period in August and September 2027.
At Prayagraj, the longest stay is a tradition in itself. Kalpvasis traditionally live in tents near the Sangam for a month, from Paush Purnima to Magh Purnima, and the district says many pilgrims spend the whole month of Magh there in prayer. Read kalpvas explained.
Questions to settle before you book
- Which day matters most? Build the stay around it, and add a spare day. The 2025 Prayagraj guidance advised leaving enough buffer time in any travel plan.
- Where will you sleep the night before a big bath? If roads close, a stay within walking distance of a ghat saves the hardest part of the day. See how to choose a stay by walking distance.
- Can you change or cancel? Haridwar’s dates are provisional, and its official stay page advises checking cancellation policies.
- Who is coming? Older people and young children tire quickly in crowds. A longer stay with short daily outings is often easier than one long day.
For a step-by-step plan, read the first-timer’s planning timeline and the Plan your Kumbh guides. For rooms, see where to stay in Haridwar and where to stay in Nashik.
