Choose a stay by the walking route from its door to your ghat on a main bathing day, for the slowest person in your group, there and back. On the biggest days vehicles are stopped well short of the river, so a room that is “near” on a map can still mean a long walk.
Why the last stretch is on foot
Recent Kumbhs have kept vehicles away from the ghats on the main days:
- Nashik 2027. The Kumbh Mela Authority’s plan moves pilgrims from outer parking to inner parking by shuttle bus. Beyond the inner parking, walking is the only way to the ghats, akharas and temple areas. The plan is marked interim.
- Haridwar 2021. The mela police barred vehicles from entering the city from 8 to 15 April, around the Shahi Snans, and sent them to temporary parking, Aaj Tak reported.
- Prayagraj 2025. For the Magh Purnima bath, the mela area became a no-vehicle zone from the morning of the day before, the Government of India said.
- Nashik 2015. Parking was planned within about 10 km of the main ghats, with public buses from there and a walk of the last two kilometres, IANS reported.
Work out your group’s walking distance
- Start from the ghat you will use, not from the town centre or the station.
- Ask the stay for its full address and check the walking route on a map, not the straight-line distance.
- Count the walk back too, when you are wet and tired, and the time spent waiting in queues.
- Plan for the slowest walker: an older relative, a small child or someone who uses a walking aid.
- Ask about steps, slopes and lifts, on the route and in the building, and get the answer in writing.
- If you come by car, find out where it will have to stop once the traffic plan for your Kumbh is published.
| Check | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Centre | Which ghat or centre is the trip for? At Nashik, is it Ramkund, Kushavarta or both? |
| Route | What is the walking route from the door to that ghat, and back? |
| Access | Is the “near” claim based on normal roads, or on a published Kumbh traffic plan? |
| Rest | Is there a place to sit and a usable toilet at the stay and on the way? |
| Changes | Can you move or cancel the booking if the dates or access plans change? |
Haridwar 2027: choosing an area by walking distance
Start from Har Ki Pauri, Haridwar’s main ghat: the official snan list places all eleven bathing days there. State and central tourism pages also name Vishnu Ghat, Gau Ghat, Birla Ghat and Kushavarta Ghat among the other ghats near the main area. In September 2025 the state government asked for new ghats, an extended Kangra Ghat, and a master plan that marks the sectors, routes, parking, ghats and camp sites. Until that plan is public, nobody can promise you a walking route for a bathing day.
These areas appear in official sources. We say what the source shows, not how good any stay is, and we do not name properties.
| Area | What official sources show | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Har Ki Pauri, Upper Road and Railway Road | The main ghat area. Registered hotels in the official directory give addresses here. | Whether a vehicle can reach the door on a snan day |
| Bhupatwala and Sapt Sarovar | Registered hotels give Bhupatwala addresses. The official site lists a lost-and-found centre at Sapt Sarovar. | The walk to your ghat, and the walk back |
| Kankhal | One of Haridwar’s Panch Tirth, home to the Daksha Mahadev Temple, with its own police station on the official list. | How far your chosen ghat is on foot |
| Jwalapur, Ranipur and Bypass Road | Addresses in the hotel lists. Jwalapur is also a railway station on the official list, and both Jwalapur and Ranipur have lost-and-found centres. | Shuttle or walking routes on bathing days |
| Shyampur, Gaindikhata and Chandighat | The state asked for a master plan for special tents in this area. | Who runs a camp, and whether it is approved |
| Rishikesh | Most hotels in the official directory are listed under Rishikesh, which has two stations on the official list. | How you will reach Haridwar early on a bathing day |
When we checked on 16 October 2026, the official directory listed 899 registered hotels: 163 under Haridwar and 736 under Rishikesh. A Rishikesh base means a daily journey: trains from Yog Nagari Rishikesh to Haridwar take about 50 minutes to an hour and a half on a normal day.
The official site also has directories of homestays and dharamshalas, a list of Kumbh camps, and links to the state’s GMVN and KMVN rest houses. Its own advice is to check the distance from the mela and the transport, the facilities and the cancellation terms, to prefer verified listings, and to expect higher demand and movement restrictions during a major snan. If you come by car, the state has asked officials to consider a shuttle service where parking is far from the ghats; check where it will stop once the traffic plan is out. Nashik, Prayagraj and Ujjain: what official sources say
Nashik 2027
Nashik and Trimbakeshwar are about 30 km apart, so a room suits one centre, not both. The authority’s rules for private tent cities allow approved operators to run only between March and December 2027, on sites of at least two acres in Nashik district. Its plan also proposes accessible corridors and ghats, and set dates away from peak periods for older people and people with disabilities; the details had not been published when we checked. Read where to stay during Nashik Kumbh.
Prayagraj Magh Mela 2027 and Ujjain 2028
For Maha Kumbh 2025, the mela authority listed tent cities in the mela area, run by vendors approved by UP Tourism, and hotels in the city. That list was for 2025; read where to stay for Magh Mela 2027 for what is known now. For Ujjain, the Simhastha is proposed for 27 March to 27 May 2028; see where to stay for Ujjain Simhastha 2028 for what is known so far.
Check the claim before you pay
Get the property’s legal name, full address, room and bathroom type, check-in time and cancellation terms in writing, and pay the business, not a person. The Home Ministry’s cyber crime centre has warned of fake websites, social media pages and WhatsApp accounts offering pilgrims hotel and guest house bookings, where people who paid got no service, so go through the checks on is this Kumbh booking real? before you pay. KumbhMela.info does not hold or sell rooms.
