The Kumbh at Nashik–Trimbakeshwar and at Ujjain is called Simhastha because, in Hindu astrological tradition, it is held when Jupiter (Brihaspati) is in Simha, the zodiac sign Leo. Both places are linked with that position of Jupiter, so both use the name.
Jupiter and the twelve-year cycle
In tradition, the timing of every Kumbh is tied to the positions of the Sun, the Moon and Jupiter. The Nashik district’s account of the Kumbh explains that Jupiter takes almost twelve years to pass through the whole zodiac. That is why a full Kumbh returns to the same place about every twelve years.
Each of the four Kumbh places is linked with a different sign for Jupiter. In the same account, the Kumbh is held at Haridwar when Jupiter is in Kumbha (Aquarius), and at Prayag when Jupiter is in Vrishabha (Taurus). When Jupiter is in Simha (Leo), it is held at Nashik and Trimbakeshwar and at Ujjain. The district page sums it up: because Jupiter is in Simha at these places, the gathering is known as Simhastha Kumbh.
Same sign, two places, two seasons
If both share Jupiter in Simha, why are they not held at the same time? The tradition adds conditions for the Sun and the Moon, and these differ by place. The Nashik district page gives the Sun and Moon in Karka (Cancer) for Nashik and Trimbakeshwar, and in Mesha (Aries) for Ujjain. Accounts do not all agree on these details, so treat them as tradition, not as a formula.
The Sun passes through all twelve signs in a year, so a condition on the Sun ties each Simhastha to a different part of the year. The Nashik–Trimbakeshwar Simhastha has its main bathing days in the monsoon, in August and September 2027. Ujjain’s is proposed for spring and early summer, from 27 March to 27 May 2028.

Is a Simhastha a Kumbh?
Yes. Simhastha is the name the Kumbh takes at these two places. Maharashtra’s Kumbh Mela Authority uses the name Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2027 for the coming event. The Mahakaleshwar temple’s official site describes Ujjain as one of the four sacred cities where the Simhastha Kumbh Mela is held, once every twelve years. In the news you will also see Simhastha used on its own, or simply Nashik Kumbh and Ujjain Kumbh.
One difference sets Nashik–Trimbakeshwar apart. According to the Nashik district’s account, the Vaishnava akharas bathe at Nashik and the Shaiva and Udasin akharas at Trimbakeshwar, while at the other Kumbh places they bathe together. See Nashik and Trimbakeshwar and Ujjain Simhastha for each place.
What the sky does and does not decide
The astrological rule sets the season, not the exact days. Bathing dates are announced by the authority running each Kumbh. In Nashik, for example, the 2027 schedule was announced after a meeting with the seers of all 13 akharas. Plan with the announced dates, not with a date worked out from the sky.
Our page on the Kumbh cycle explains the twelve-year pattern at all four places, and the four Kumbh places compares their rivers and seasons.
