Mankameshwar Temple, Prayagraj
The Mankameshwar temple is a temple of Shiva beside Saraswati Ghat on the Yamuna, near Minto Park, west of the fort. Its lingam is of black stone.
The temple and what you see there do not change. The dress and offering rules on this page were reported for Shravan 2026 and may change. Temple arrangements for Magh Mela 2027 had not been announced on 16 October 2026.
Shravan, the month of Shiva, is a major time at the temple, when pilgrims carry Ganga water from the Sangam to its lingam. For the 2025 Maha Kumbh, the mela authority listed Mankameshwar among its boat points to the Sangam.

A Shiva temple on the Yamuna
UP Tourism describes Mankameshwar as a temple of Shiva standing beside Saraswati Ghat on the Yamuna. The district places it near Minto Park, on the west side of the fort along the river. The mela authority’s 2025 website gives the same description.
Official sources do not tell the temple’s story or give its age, so we do not either. The Ministry of Culture lists it among the notable temples of Prayagraj.
Minto Park, next to Saraswati Ghat, has a stone memorial with a four-lion symbol whose foundation was laid by Lord Minto in 1910, the district says.
What you see at the temple
- A black stone lingam of Shiva, with images of Ganesh and Nandi.
- A large image of Hanuman.
- An ancient peepal tree near the temple.
- Saraswati Ghat on the Yamuna, beside the temple.
These are the features the district and the mela authority list. Neither gives timings or entry rules.
Shravan at Mankameshwar
On the first day of Shravan 2026, Prabhat Khabar reported, the mahant, Shridharanand, performed a special abhishek and shringar of the lingam at dawn before the doors opened, and rudrabhishek and special aartis were planned for the whole month. In Shravan, devotees and kanwariyas carry Ganga water from the Triveni Sangam to Mankameshwar and other old Shiva temples of the city.
For Shravan 2026 the temple asked devotees to wear traditional dress to enter the sanctum and offer jalabhishek: a dhoti for men, and a sari or salwar suit for women. Jeans, T-shirts and short clothes were not allowed, and nor was water or milk in plastic containers, the paper said. We found no official notice that these rules apply all year, so check before you go.
Getting there from the Sangam
The temple is west of the fort, along the Yamuna. The Sangam lies below the eastern walls of the same fort, which holds the Akshayavat and the Patalpuri temple.
For the 2025 Maha Kumbh the mela authority published boat routes to the Sangam from 14 ghats and crossings, Mankameshwar and Saraswati Ghat among them, with a fixed fare per person. No boat routes or fares have been published for 2027.
During a mela, vehicles are stopped well before the river around the main bathing days and the last stretch is on foot. In 2025 those rules ran from the day before to the day after each main bathing day. The plan for 2027 has not been published. See how to reach Prayagraj and our Sangam guide.
Before the 2025 Maha Kumbh, IANS reported that a Mankameshwar temple corridor, a state tourism department project, was nearing completion. We found no official description of the finished work.
Mankameshwar and the Magh Mela 2027
The next big mela at the Sangam is the Magh Mela 2027, expected from Friday 15 January to Saturday 6 March 2027, with six main bathing days. Its last expected bathing day is Mahashivratri, Saturday 6 March 2027, the great night of Shiva. The mela authority has not yet published its list; see the bathing days page.
Temple arrangements for the mela, including any for Mahashivratri, have not been announced. Main bathing days usually draw the most pilgrims; follow police and mela instructions on the day.
2027 is not a Kumbh year at Prayagraj. The next Ardh Kumbh is expected in 2031. See all holy places of Prayagraj.
