Holy Places of Prayagraj

Five holy places stand near the Sangam at Prayagraj: the Akshayavat in the Patalpuri temple, the Bade Hanuman temple, the Alopi Devi temple, the Mankameshwar temple and the Nag Vasuki temple. The Ministry of Culture notes that pilgrims who come to the Sangam also visit the city's temples.

The places and their traditions do not change. Entry rules, temple works and mela arrangements do, and none had been announced for Magh Mela 2027 on 16 October 2026.

This page tells you what each place is and where it lies in relation to the Sangam. Each one has its own page with its traditions, what you see there and what is known for the Magh Mela 2027.

Locations are from the Prayagraj district, the mela authority’s 2025 website and UP Tourism. Official sources give no timings for any of the five, so check locally before you go.

How the places fit a visit to the Sangam

Beside the bathing area. The Sangam lies below the eastern walls of the fort, about 7 km from Civil Lines, the district says. The Akshayavat and the Patalpuri temple are inside that fort, and the Bade Hanuman temple is close by on the Ganga side. Our guide to the Sangam covers the bathing area itself.

Along the Yamuna. The Mankameshwar temple stands further west, by Saraswati Ghat. For the 2025 Maha Kumbh the mela authority listed Mankameshwar among the points with boats to the Sangam.

In the city and upstream. The Alopi Devi temple is in the Alopibagh locality, and the Nag Vasuki temple is on the Ganga at the north end of Daraganj, some kilometres north of the Sangam. ETV Bharat reported in 2025 that many pilgrims hold a visit to Prayagraj incomplete without darshan at Nag Vasuki after the bath.

During a mela, roads near the river are closed to vehicles around the main bathing days, so expect to walk between the bathing area and these temples on those days. In 2025 the no-vehicle rules ran from the day before to the day after each main bathing day. The traffic plan for 2027 has not been published; see how to reach Prayagraj.

Changes at the temples since 2018

Entry to the Akshayavat changed before the 2019 Kumbh, and several of these places were rebuilt or renovated for the 2025 Maha Kumbh. This is what official sources and news reports say, with dates.

  • 16 December 2018. The Prime Minister visited the Akshay Vat and announced that pilgrims at the 2019 Kumbh would also be able to visit it, according to the Press Information Bureau. The tree is inside a fort the army uses; read the Akshayavat page for how entry has changed.
  • November 2024. IANS reported that state tourism department works at the Mankameshwar and Alop Shankari temples were nearing completion.
  • 13 December 2024. The Prime Minister said the Hanuman and Akshaya Vat corridors were being built, and that Patalpuri, the Saraswati Koop and the Nagvasuki temple were being renovated.
  • 29 December 2024. A Ministry of Culture note listed new Akshayavat, Saraswati Koop and Patalpuri corridors, the Hanuman temple corridor and the renovation of the Nagvasuki temple among the Maha Kumbh works.
  • 6 July 2026. The head mahant of the Bade Hanuman temple said its corridor was in its final phase, the Free Press Journal reported.

We found no official notice that all of these works are finished, so entry routes at the temples may differ from what you read elsewhere.

The temples and the Magh Mela 2027

The next big mela at the Sangam is the Magh Mela 2027, expected from Friday 15 January (Makar Sankranti) to Saturday 6 March 2027 (Mahashivratri), with six main bathing days. The mela authority has not yet published its list; see the bathing days page.

Temple arrangements for the mela, such as entry routes, queues or timings at these five places, have not been announced. Main bathing days usually draw the most pilgrims; follow police and mela instructions on the day.

2027 is not a Kumbh year at Prayagraj. The last Kumbh there was the Maha Kumbh, from 13 January to 26 February 2025, and the next Ardh Kumbh is expected in 2031.
